Decide what you want to hear through your window!

Sono: a device to cancel noise from outside
By ArchReady - 28/Nov/2013

In this noisy and busy world we live in, a moment of silence can be a rare experience or even a luxury for those living in dense urban environments.

Would not it be nice to cancel an annoying noise, replacing it with a more pleasing sound, like chirping birds?

This principle has motivated the Austrian designer Rudolf Stefanich in creating "Sono": an innovative device that you can stick onto your window to cancel, or even filter and control which outside sounds you want to hear inside your home.

Does it sound too good to be true?

Although it is still in a prototype stage, this device has been shortlisted as one of the 20 finalists for the James Dyson Award, one of the most prestigious international design competitions, and has been successfully tested, proving to be able of filtering out noises up to 12 decibels and some softer sounds up to 80 decibels.

In fact, its working principle is quite simple: the "Sono" device sticks to the window where it senses the noise vibrations on the glass surface, using this information to generate a signal that cancels out the vibrations, similar to the way the noise-cancelling headphones protect your ears from external noise.

The strength of this innovation is that it does not just eliminate unpleasant noises, but also allows you to select and filter out pleasant ambient sounds through so, beyond the silence, you can enjoy the morning chirping birds or the sound of rustling leaves from that park across the street.

Besides its battery can be recharged via electrical plugging or Wi-Fi, this device employs concentric broadband antenna rings allowing it to harvest the energy of electromagnetic noise, thus reducing also the level of e-smog pollution in an environment.

This video allows you to understand how the "Sono" works:
