The idea of building a public swimming pool floating in the East River came as a consequence of hot summers in New York and the lack of recreational aquatic areas in the city, prevented by the rivers need for treatment and infrastructure.
The project is called + Pool and aims to build a floating pool capable of filtering river water, and provide at the same time a clean, safe and natural environment, where everyone can swim.

Developed by architects from Playlab and Family, both based in New York, the project + Pool consists in a structure composed by four pools that can be used simultaneously by different groups of people or for different functionalities such as sports or competitions.

The great innovation of + Pool is a filtering system that reuses the same water from the river on which the swimming pool floats. After conducting some studies on the filtration system and sustainability of the project, one of the most innovative engineering firms in the world, Arup, confirmed its feasibility.
Initially planned to be installed in East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, this pool can be further moved to other places such as the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey, or it may be anchored next to Ellis Island.

This ambitious project recently launched on Kickstarter the campaign "Tile by Tile" for the purpose of raising funds to build a prototype that will serve as floating laboratory, which will be located at Brooklyn’s waterfront by next August.

Following this growing trend of collective funding this campaign overcame the goal of $ 250,000 in donations and had the support of more than 50,000 people, making it the largest civic project through collective financing ever proposed. The supporters of this project will see their names engraved in the swimming pool tiles.

At this time, the manufacture and assembly of the laboratory in the Brooklyn Navy Yard are in progress, in order to open the + Pool to the public in summer of 2016, just in time for the Olympics!
