A total of 19 Portuguese projects were nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe, released on 16 December.

A total of 420 projects were selected, from 36 countries, most of which coming from Spain, with 35 nominations. Most of the projects are housing related (27%), followed by cultural facilities (24%), education-related (11%) and the remaining (33%) refer to sport, commercial, governmental, transport and urban projects.

Established in 1987 by the European Union, the Mies Van der Rohe prize is awarded biennially and amounts to 60,000 euros. This is one of the most prestigious and important awards for European architecture.

The 2015 edition also includes the Emerging Architect Prize, worth 20,000 euros, which is intended for professionals beginning their career.

This year´s edition of the Prize presents a novelty, the Young Talent Architecture Prize (YTAP) which will recognise the best master degree projects from Europe. Their authors will have the opportunity to establish a network with the Winner, the Finalists and the Emerging Architect of the Prize while taking their first steps in the professional world. Students of the 2014-2015 academic year from around 40 universities in Europe will have the possibility to participate in the first edition of the YTAP.

From this initial list, a Jury chaired by Italian architect Cino Zucchi will choose at the end of January the shortlisted and finalist works, to be announced in May 2015.
