Zaha Hadid and AECOM have been selected to design the Al Wakrah Stadium for FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. With a tournament capacity for 45,000 spectators, the new stadium will be located in one of the oldest inhabited areas in Qatar, with a rich cultural heritage evidenced by its traditional Islamic architecture, historical buildings, distinctive mosques and archaeological sites. According to the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, embracing the identity of this cultural heritage is a crucial part for the success of the stadium.

Considering the high temperatures of this region, the project will integrate cooling-technology systems with climate-control requirements for renewable energy production.

Apart from the stadium, there are also planned an aquatic centre and other sports facilities, a spa and a shopping area. After the games, a modular part of the stadium will be removed, reducing its capacity to 20,000 spectators, in a perspective of sustainability and cost effectiveness of maintenance.
