Taking advantage of its expertise in designing modular systems in flat packs, the IKEA Foundation has designed a modular shelter for refugees in collaboration with the UN refugee agency.

The goal was to develop a new approach to these shelters, creating a modular system easier to ship, easier to assemble and easier to live in. The shelters are shipped in flat cardboard packs, like an IKEA shelf, and can be assembled in about four hours.

The Graça district in Lisbon is the centre stage of several urban interventions resulting from an international workshop of architecture, design and art.

The International workshop MEDS Lisbon2013 – REACTION, the first to occur in Portugal, takes place August 3-18 and will serve as a catalyst for change with issues being identified and the students proposing real solutions that can be designed and carried out during the workshop. 

Designed for the city of Stockholm, Sweden, by the architects C.F. Møller and Dinell Johansson and the consultant Tyréns, this 34-storey building will be the largest structure in the world to be constructed in wood.

The architects ensure that this solution is more sustainable, durable and more resistant to fire than a traditional steel and concrete construction.
