Versatile and Harmonious Spaces
By Paula Margarido, Architect Feng Shui Consultant - 03/Jun/2013

Decorating a children bedroom has its complexity, because it often has to function as a place for sleeping and playing.

Therefore versatility and harmony are keywords when it comes to decorating these rooms. The challenge here is to make this area fun during the day and quiet at night.

When a bedroom is shared by two children, each one must have their own private space.

It should be avoided for children to have a television in their own room, as it isolates them from the rest of the family and negatively affects their social relationships, besides the electromagnetic radiation emitted by electrical equipment.

The ideal locations are the East and southeast, children bedrooms should be exposed to light in the morning to catch more sun. For children with a tendency to be hyperactive the best location is west. East and Southeast have the chi energy associated with growth and harmonious development of the child. West has a calmer chi energy beneficial for a peaceful night's sleep.

Here are some advices to balance and harmonize environments applying Feng Shui techniques to children's bedrooms:

Furniture: Choose wooden furniture with rounded edges. The bed must have headboard which should be against a wall. In the bedroom the location of the bed is one of the most important factors of Feng Shui. The position of the bed should allow the child to see who enters the bedroom. Avoid shelves above the bed.

Do not choose bunk beds for children, unless the bedroom is too small. A good option is a bed with drawers. Avoid placing study tables against the wall, so that the child doesn’t get disheartened by studying facing the wall. It is also not advisable to stay backs to the door. The desk must be overlooking the door and be organized.

Lighting: is advisable to have a variety of lights, especially if the room is used for several purposes. A brighter light is recommended for study activities and games for children, in addition to soft lighting.

Drapes: fabrics help to slow down chi energy, but drapes shouldn’t be too shut to avoid stagnation. Always open the drapes during the day allowing the sunlight to enter the bedroom.

Floor covering: wood produces tree energy and generally guarantees a harmonious flow of chi energy in the bedroom. We recommend a rug besides the bed and study table.

Organization: children's rooms are easily littered with toys and other objects. Opt for shelves that allow some storage for toys in boxes. Incite children to keep their rooms tidy and their study tables organized.

Atmosphere: good ventilation, lighting and neatness are the key words. Remove the computer and TV from the bedroom to avoid the magnetic radiation emitted by these devices. Wall colours should be smooth; the most recommended are light blue, light green, pink or lilac. Red is not advisable for being too stimulating. A welcoming atmosphere full of lightness in the room provides a peaceful and restful sleep.

Decoration: Hang positive pictures, you can frame your children’s drawings. Photos with family and friends are also a good option.

Prefer soft colours for decoration, such as green, purple, blue, pink, white or pastel shades. But of course, colourful toys are always welcome; just don’t overuse red because it can cause agitation. Bright colours, especially yellow, orange and red, are more yang and therefore more exciting. Soft colours, such as blue and green are more yin and quieter.

Finally, the bedroom should be cheerful, airy and light. And allow children to participate in their bedroom decoration, the little ones will love it...

Avoid:

Open doors - keep the door ajar at night to slow down energy flow, helping children to fall asleep.

Beds with feet facing the door, Chinese consider this position as the "coffin".

Headboards beneath windows make chi energy more active and may prevent a good night's sleep.

Stuff under the bed; keep some empty space for chi flow.

Outdated and damaged toys, books that children never read, outdated clothes, a messy bedroom and lots of furniture.
