A design icon

Lem, the world's most famous stool
By Nuno Ladeiro, Architect - 03/Oct/2014

In 1979, brothers Dario Romano and Romano Marcato founded in Cadoneghe, near Padua in Italy, the furniture factory La Palma, which became a model of success for many designers around the world.

The business philosophy was based on harmony between the quality of the design created by Marcato and the entrepreneurial dynamism from Romano.

Coca-Cola Lounge - Berlin

The purpose of these two brothers was to guide production into a rationale aesthetic, which translates into an exquisite while functional style. Each piece of furniture is articulated in a systemic vision of atmospheres and environments, establishing a permanent dialogue between proportions and components.

Namamen Japanese Bar - Basel

For these two entrepreneurs, quality was a key element in the strategy of the factory, which reflects in all phases of the project: the use and control of raw materials - wood originating from natural plantation, leather, metal, wicker, glass - the continuous investment in research in materials and mechanisms, work processes from suppliers and the way the assembly of the components is made, control, packaging and distribution.

Shambala Bar - Vienna

Beyond the adopted criteria of production and industrialization, La Palma has conducted a policy of excellence with designers and architects of international reputation, invited to the development of their product lines.

Hotel Puerta Valencia - Valencia

The result is clear to La Palma and the products have achieved several awards, including, recently, the consecration of interior design product of the year in England - FX International Interior Design Awards– and the Japanese Good Design Award.

Susuru Japanese Restaurant - Berlin

Among all products, the one that stands most is the Lem stool, Lem, design by Shin & Tomoko Azumi. Inspired by the flowing lines of the work of Alvar Aalto, this stool has become an icon and can be seen today in the many bars and restaurants all over the world. Currently is one of the most copied objects due to its linear and fluid forms.
