How to choose a new house?

Some Feng Shui principles
By Paula Margarido, Architect Feng Shui Consultant - 21/Oct/2013

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art that seeks to harmonize an environment through the study and analysis of the energy of a place and its inhabitants. Through Feng Shui seeks to improve and activate the energy fields that exist in our homes, cancelling and avoiding less positive energies that exist in these environments.

The School of Form is considered the oldest and most traditional, applied in Feng Shui consultations. This school aims to analyse, read and interpret the forms and energies, explicit or subtle, of local landscape and relief.

Traditionally in China, when choosing a location for building a house all factors were considered such as the shape of the terrain, local weather patterns, water flow etc.. Thus through the landforms around certain location, it could be determined which were the "guardians" of the site. Each "Guardian" has meaning, symbolism and energy of its own, and these "guardians" are known as "The Protective Animal" of Feng Shui.

When planning our life, one of our major concerns is looking for a home to live or a plot to build a house. The ideal is to find a house with good finishes and good construction, good environment and good energy.

Before you purchase or build a house, the surrounding conditions must be observed. Take into account what happens in the neighborhood; automobile traffic, trade, vegetation, neighboring buildings, the presence of antennas, electricity poles, etc.. See the various aspects in more detail:

1 - The first impression is the most important

The first impression is crucial when choosing a home. When visiting homes pay close attention to the sensations you feel and detail you see. Observe the house with all the senses and trust your intuition. If you do not feel well when entering the house is better not choose that house ... You can later lead a child and ask her what it felt like. Children have pure energy and detect a lot of subtle energies. If you don’t feel safe in choosing, don’t hurry and don’t close the deal.

2 - How is the neighbourhood?

Watch the neighbourhood very closely. Avoid troublesome and noisy neighbours. Avoid houses near cemeteries, churches, hospitals (sirens), airports, police stations and bars that have sometimes noisy customers. Avoid houses near rail lines, railways and houses on streets with heavy traffic and polluted. When searching its surroundings you may see aerial views and search Google.

Also notice the wind direction and if there are corners of nearby buildings (cutting chi) or reflective facades. Buildings under construction or abandoned in the proximities are also situations to avoid.

You should also avoid land with dead trees, no birds and lifeless spots.

3 – The four celestial animals

Watch very closely the implementation of the apartment building or house. See if the four celestial animals are visible - turtle, dragon, tiger and phoenix.

Let us explain the meaning of each:

The turtle is an animal that passes protective and safety energy. It is located on the back of the house. It also transmits stability, power, authority and firmness energy. In general, it was represented by a high mountain, nowadays we can identify the turtle as a taller building behind the house or a tall tree.

The Dragon is a very special animal for the Chinese as it represents wisdom, intuition and sensitivity. It is located on the left of the house and it was represented by a high mountain. Nowadays we can consider the building on the left and see if the building is higher or lower than the house we want to buy or lease. If there are no buildings next door, we must take this into account, because the dragon is also associated with male energy.

The Tiger is an animal representing physical strength, emotions, self-preservation, action and reaction. It is located at the right of the house and is represented by a mountain, lower than the dragon. If there are no buildings on the right side of the house, we must take this into account because the tiger is also associated with feminine energy.

The Phoenix is an animal representing the capacity of vision, of seeing horizons, opportunities, dreaming, our goals and objectives. It is located in front of the house, where we can see the wide landscape, giving the idea of freedom and the future. The ideal is to have clear view in front of our house and no high-rise blocking views and sunlight.

If you choose a building plot, the study of the land through the lens of dowsing is highly recommended, especially if the location is found near a river.

A professional dowser will advise if there is some sort of energy from the soil, which may have influence on the house and its inhabitants, and how to correct the situation.

The terrain shape is also important. Look for plots in rectangular or square shapes. For Feng Shui, are the best shapes to build a house. A good plot is one that has "support" - Turtle ", one of the four sacred animals of Feng Shui, which can be a mountain, a building, a house, a tree or a wall.

4 - Who lived here?

Find out who lived there previously, through the real estate agent or neighbours. Find out the history of the former inhabitants, their energy pattern, economic and social development are very important. After seeing a lot of houses you will notice that a lot of houses are reputed to bring luck and prosperity for its inhabitants. A harmonious home is good to live, while in others there are stories of disharmony, separation, sadness, unemployment and even diseases.

And such situations when repeated will influence the new residents. One way to break this "energy pattern" is to carry out building work, or change all the characteristics of the property: painting, flooring, bathrooms and kitchens, etc. And also do not forget to find out if the house has ghost stories and if there was some tragedy.

5 - The price

Homes with a selling price or rent far below the market can be appealing, but it may be something wrong. Search, review documents and chat with neighbours or seek help from a solicitor. Try to obtain as much information as possible, you can never be too careful.

6 - Telecom and broadcasting antennas

Pay attention to the surrounding area and check for nearby high-voltage cables, telecom or broadcasting antennas. These situations are harmful to our health. Find out if there is no antenna installed on the rooftop ... it happens sometimes.

7 - Construction details

Closely examine the house and see if there are pathologies in construction - leaks, cracks, mould or damp.

Also observe plumbing and sewers, because any leaks and water loss is a sign of energy loss, whether financial, emotional or health.

If you feel unsure ask for help from a technician, an architect or an engineer.

8 - Groundwater

A situation that must be avoided is to sleep in a room on groundwater because it is harmful for health. Through rods or loupan - Chinese compass - it is possible to detect the existence of groundwater. Look for a Feng Shui consultant specializing in Geobiology and Dowsing to help you.

9 - Access and commerce

Accessibility is also a factor to take into account, i.e., good access, parking, public transport, local shops are favourable aspects. Having schools nearby is also very important, especially if you have children of school age.

10 – Energy and general cleaning

Before moving to a new home is essential to make an energy and general cleaning of all rooms. It should clear the energy from previous owners or residents. Make an energy cleansing ceremony and look for a Feng Shui consultant, specializing in Space Clearing to do the job.

11 - Shape of the house

The shape of the house is very important; ideally the house or apartment should have a regular rectangular and flawless plan shape. A house with an irregular shape, L-shaped for example, is a situation to avoid. A bathroom in the centre of the house is not an ideal situation. Stairs in the centre of the house are also not favourable.

The position of the bathrooms and kitchen in the house is a very important factor. A depth Feng Shui study will help, because each case is different and depends on the type of analysis. If you have the opportunity of making renovations, you can correct certain less favourable situations. An architect specialized in Feng Shui may help you.
