New Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

The president of Real Madrid unveils winning project
By ArchReady - 04/Feb/2014

The president of Real Madrid officially announced that the project by gmp ArchitektenL35 Arquitectos and Ribas & Ribas Arquitectos is the winner of the “International Tender for Architectural Ideas for the remodelling of the Santiago Bernabéu”.

“We want to turn the Santiago Bernabéu into the best stadium in the world and to create a better football experience for the fans. The best stadium in a unique location that will be a global symbol”, stated Florentino Pérez at the presentation of the project.

Once complete in 2017, the €400M redevelopment will have extended stand capacities by four levels, integrated a commercial centre, a hotel and a VIP area into the stadium’s side, and, most notably, topped the structure with a metallic, retractable roof wrapped in an interactive display LEDs, with a viewing angle of 360 degrees, so fans can follow the most memorable moments of the match or commemorative videos.

The promotional video of the project shows its implementation step by step, from the removal of the current roof, through the construction of new wings, to the implementation of the new exterior structure.

Volkwin Marg, the German architect and an international leader in sports venues who heads the project team in charge of the new Santiago Bernabéu, said that the goal is “to transform it into the most advanced and developed twenty-first century stadium. This building is undoubtedly the most important project of our careers”.

Florentino Pérez took the floor after a touching video about the history of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. “It is impossible to understand everything that Real Madrid is today without this stadium. The stadium remodel is a strategic drive towards modernity. Building and raising the stadium was a challenge in its day. Santiago Bernabéu paved the way and we became the leader in sports venues. This stadium and the signing of Alfredo Di Stéfano changed the legend of Real Madrid. The new twenty-first century Santiago Bernabéu will continue to be a privileged, emotional place and a source of pride for all our members and fans”.
