The community of East Village, the former Olympic village in London, has enthusiastically welcomed its first the Christmas illuminations - an enchanted forest of "Frozen Trees".
This light installation, designed by the young Portuguese LIKEarchitects, consists of a series of "trees" made from 1,296 dispensers of plastic bags (Rationell Variera, IKEA), illuminated with low energy consumption LED lights connected to car batteries.
First displayed on Praça D. Pedro IV (Rossio), Lisbon, for the Christmas lighting in 2011, this installation was awarded in 2013 at the 5th Minsk International Biennale of Young Architects, winning first place in the category of “Landscape architecture, city design and monumental art and sculpture in the architecture ".
Beyond its artistic component, this installation celebrates sustainability, making a call for creativity and multi-functionality in the current socio-economic climate.
The “Frozen Trees” will remain illuminated in the heart of East Village, between Belvedere and Victory Park, fronting onto Celebration Avenue, and may be seen until early 2015.
