Red Dot Design Award 2013

International Awards for Design and Architecture
By ArchReady - 01/Jul/2013

The Red Dot Design Award 2013 gala is celebrated on July 1 in the Aalto-Theater in the German city of Essen, highlighting once again creativity and innovation in design and architecture.

The Red Dot Design Award provides a platform where designers and architects throughout the world can join the major references in this sector. This international event comprises several categories and is now referenced one of the main design competitions worldwide.

This year, two architecture and urban design projects stood out among the winners on the category Best of the Best: the Platform of Arts and Creativity, in Guimarães, Portugal, designed by the Portuguese  Pitágoras and Superkilen Masterplan in Copenhagen, Denmark, designed by the Danish BIG, Topotek1 and Superflex.

The Platform of Arts and Creativity was inaugurated on June 24, 2012 and is inserted in the area of the former Municipal Market of Guimarães. It hosts various cultural and artistic activities, including an international centre for the arts, multiple exhibition areas and an auditorium with capacity for 200 people.

Superkilen is a multidisciplinary park which stands out in the dense urban fabric of the Danish capital. Inserted in the most multicultural part of the city, it is intended to be a reference point in a more disadvantaged area of the city, boosting the economy and contributing towards social cohesion, alluding to the different ethnic groups that comprise it. The result is a vibrant and dynamic combination of different colours and environments, featuring three distinct spaces dedicated to a wide range of recreational activities and leisure.

The judging process is always based on different assessment criteria, such as functionality, degree of innovation, or symbolic and emotional content. These criteria provide a guidance framework for the jury members, who then make their individual contribution based on their background and experience. Thus they quite consciously take the special intercultural aspects of design into account in their evaluation. “red dot celebrates exceptional design from around the globe and in turn celebrates the achievements of designers who use great skill throughout their work”, explained this year’s new jury member Professor Jimmy Choo.

“The red dot design award has opened its doors to the world over the years, to encourage global participation. This gives designers and manufacturers from all nations the opportunity to participate and promote their expertise and creative ability”, explains Belinda Stening.

This year the competition received over four thousand applications, from more than 50 countries. The selected works will be exhibited during the month of July at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany.
