Braamcamp Freire Secondary School, in Pontinha, was voted the best school building in WAN Award, presented by World Architecture News.

The building was designed by the architects Cristina Verissimo and Diogo Burnay that, under the Modernisation of Secondary Schools Programme, transformed a building composed of several pavilions in a single volume.

The jury praised this restructuring work of space, and also summarised the victorious design as a ‘simple, robust, well executed project built with an incredibly low budget’. The use of colour was hihlighted as a clever touch because ‘it changes the light throughout the day, which is delightful’.

Diogo Burnay reinforced to Agência Lusa that the credit is to the entire team involved, which included 16 young architects. He added, "In these days, with the crisis in this sector, it feels good to receive an award."

Congratulations to this team that once again has demonstrated the expertise and creativity of Portuguese architects!
